“Cold Hearth” Illuminated Door- Kinetic Functional Artwork

This functional room divider is firstly a work of art designed by Joan Waltemath. Linnea Tillet of Tillet Lighting Design worked closely with Joan on the development of the piece, as artificial light is as important to the 24-hour cycle of the changing appearances of this artwork as is daylight.

Steve Samuels and Work With Your Brain, LLC, fabricated this 8′ x 8′ artwork, which has a structural metal frame, acrylic panels including custom-cast phosphorescent plastic, and custom LED lighting. One challenge to fabrication was that the unit needed to be brought into a small elevator in a residential building, so it needed to be engineered to be knock-down for transport and handling and reassembled on site.

The artwork is conceptually and physically integrated with the architecture of the private space designed by Azin Valy and Suzan Wines of I-Beam Design & Architecture.
